A sect, the Church of Christ, Scientist,
established in the USA by Mary Baker Eddy
1879. Christian Scientists believe that since
God is good and is a spirit, matter and evil
are not ultimately real. Consequently they
refuse all medical treatment. It has its own
daily newspaper, the Christian Science
Monitor. Christian Science is regarded by its
adherents as the restatement of primitive
Christianity with its full gospel of
salvation from all evil, including sickness
and disease as well as sin. According to its
adherents, Christian Science healing is
brought about by the operation of truth in
human conscience. There is no ordained
priesthood, but there are public
practitioners of Christian Science healing
who are officially authorized. The
headquarters of the First Church of Christ,
Scientist is in Boston, Massachusetts, with
branches in most parts of the world. The
textbook of Christian Science is Eddy's
Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures
1875.
